(IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?)
Hello Reader,
I know many of you have a great understanding of what it's like to set a big goal.
Many runners often set a big goal that coincides with a race - whether it's trying to set a personal best, going a longer distance, or in my case - summer training with a goal of qualifying for Boston this fall.
I decided to document my journey, and called it the "3:42 Project" - that was the finish time I wanted to have (that I felt) would secure me a spot for the 2026 Boston Marathon next April.
There are 31 videos smashed into one - it's just over an hour, and you can watch it on 2x speed to save time:)
The documenting/"get serious" training began 7/6/25, which was exactly two months from the marathon. My plan was to do a short video each day that shared my activity for that day.
I will save the "what I learned" from this training cycle for another time because I want to share what has happened over the past few weeks.
The second to last video I created, I was super frustrated because I went out for a simple 4 mile run, and I felt like I had no speed. I felt somewhat defeated, and knew that I couldn't attempt the marathon feeling the way I did during that run. I was on my way to a conference that afternoon, where I believe I unlocked a secret weapon to training.
This was how I felt during my 17 mile run after my first seminar!
Many runners (and most athletes) know the highs and lows of sport performance can drive you crazy. For those of us "seasoned" athletes, we are not only working on body preservation, but if there are things we can do to improve performance, we are at least open to listening.
I went to this conference to listen. To learn. To follow an intuitive hunch to try something different. Not only for me, but for my athletes, and my business.
I'm feeling (and sounding) much better than I was even a week ago. I'm still piecing all of this together, and how quickly everything changed.
The biggest takeaway is similar to a quote that has been attributed to Confucius: "A healthy man (woman) wants a thousand things, a sick man(woman) only wants one."
Right now, I'm enjoying the blessing of feeling a bit better each day, and appreciating the ability to return to walking. All of the other details regarding running, racing, and the business will come soon.
As I focus on those words from Confucius, the truth of my closing tagline never seemed more appropriate.
Keep moving forward my friends, one step at a time.
Coach Nicole
TRAINING TIP:
I wanted to share a very important component of my training. As we get older, we lose the elasticity (spring) from our tendons and many of our tissues get stiffer.
SLOWLY incorporating some jump/plyometric activity as a masters athlete is one of the best ways to work on speed, balance, and power.
We'll talk about this in more detail another time, but I wanted to share a quick way to get some "spring in your step" here:
Fall temperatures are coming—are you ready to play outside? Don’t let little aches become big roadblocks. I've been running, racing, and helping athletes for 25+ years, and I'm here to keep YOU moving!

Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, Anytime I start with a new client, I ask about their goals. If they are training for a race, I want to know if they are seeking completion, performance, or a combination of the two. Each runner has a different "WHY" behind their intention of signing up for a challenge like the marathon. The more I understand their "why", it helps us both. I had a virtual call with...
Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, History was made a few weeks ago at the 2025 Chicago Marathon. Conner Mantz broke American Marathon Record at 2:04:43, which is 4:45 minutes per mile. The crazy thing? HE WAS FOURTH PLACE OVERALL EVEN AT THIS PACE! The overall male winner came in at 2:02:23 - I'll let you do the math in case you want to train to win for next year. Best part of Chicago Marathon -...
Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, Usually, I start these emails with a story about something that has been happening in my life or training. (If you didn't catch my last email, find out what happened with my summer training/attempt for Boston here)https://app.kit.com/publications/17294908/reports/overview This week, I wanted to share one of the most inspirational stories I've seen in a long time....
