In The Long Run

IMPACTful THOUGHTS:

(IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?)

Hello Reader,

Anytime I start with a new client, I ask about their goals. If they are training for a race, I want to know if they are seeking completion, performance, or a combination of the two.

Each runner has a different "WHY" behind their intention of signing up for a challenge like the marathon. The more I understand their "why", it helps us both.

I had a virtual call with a client who was supposed to run NYC this year, but unfortunately had to defer to next year due to a brain health issue (multiple concussions).

I asked her how she was feeling despite the fact that she was "supposed" to be amongst the 59,662 runners at the starting line in Staten Island.

"When I signed up, I did it to escape my job, and I NEEDED an accomplishment." She was kind enough to share with me that she is no longer at that job and while recovering from her traumatic brain injury, she gained tremendous perspective and a new outlook:

"I no longer do life for accomplishments. I DO LIFE FOR JOY. I'm not going to win this thing, I want to COMPLETE it. I want to take this (year before her marathon) time to focus on longevity, being healthy, strong, and filled with joy."

As I listened to her, I beamed like a proud mama. She's talking about a "jumpstart" for life!

One of many reasons I love helping clients is to ensure they are not only pain or injury free, but equipped with the right tools and strategies to optimize their lives.

This can often shift perspective from an external focus (validation) to internal (joy). Especially with masters athletes (over 40) with the goal of positive health span/longevity.

Races will come and go, but the ability to take care of your body and mind will serve you for life.

A masters runner coming back from injury/illness tends to acknowledge the gift of health and the ability to run or race. They tend to be less concerned about split times or a personal best and their "why" is often driven from joy - "because I can".

Because my client is now driven by joy, I have no doubt that "because I can" will drive her right across that finish line in 2026!

Keep moving forward my friends, one step at a time.

Coach Nicole

NYC MARATHON:

Who said social media is all bad?? These posts from the NYC Marathon (via Instagram) let you feel like you were right there with the crowd:)

Another record setting year of participants and finishers this year in NYC - the biggest marathon in the world! My guess is next year they might hit 60K??

Runners, families, friends, random strangers, volunteers, pets, ALL come out for one of the best days of the year in New York. What makes it so great? Humanity.

"True humanity" means acting with empathy, compassion, and kindness toward others, recognizing our shared nature, and striving to improve the world. It involves seeing past differences, helping those in need, and behaving with integrity, politeness, and grace, even when it's difficult. It is about embodying positive human traits rather than just existing as a human being.

These photos aren't from the NYC marathon, but they illustrate the same concept - humanity.

"If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon." - Kathrine Switzer.

Congrats to all of the runners, and to all that contributed to an amazing day of HUMANITY!

TREAD TALK:

Last week, I mentioned that I was torn about signing up with a charity to run Boston next year. One run last week helped me decide:

LET ME HELP YOU!

People often ask me if I ONLY work with runners or ONLY work with women:

I've spent the past 25+ years helping anyone who needed it. My specialty is working with female runners over 40, but I also love to help those who are "stuck" and want health/longevity.

Stop wasting time "guessing" about your issues, and talk to an expert that speaks running better than AI :)

Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, History was made a few weeks ago at the 2025 Chicago Marathon. Conner Mantz broke American Marathon Record at 2:04:43, which is 4:45 minutes per mile. The crazy thing? HE WAS FOURTH PLACE OVERALL EVEN AT THIS PACE! The overall male winner came in at 2:02:23 - I'll let you do the math in case you want to train to win for next year. Best part of Chicago Marathon -...

Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, Usually, I start these emails with a story about something that has been happening in my life or training. (If you didn't catch my last email, find out what happened with my summer training/attempt for Boston here)https://app.kit.com/publications/17294908/reports/overview This week, I wanted to share one of the most inspirational stories I've seen in a long time....

Jumpstartrunning Presents: In The Long Run IMPACTful THOUGHTS: (IMPACT is my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?) Hello Reader, I know many of you have a great understanding of what it's like to set a big goal. Many runners often set a big goal that coincides with a race - whether it's trying to set a personal best, going a longer distance, or in my case - summer training with a goal of qualifying for Boston this fall. I decided to document my journey, and called it the "3:42 Project" -...
