Last night, I completed the second of two live performances from my eight week IMPROV class.
Our team name was "The Juicy Grapes"
I signed up for this class before I moved to Boulder for three reasons:
I wanted to do something social that was not related to running
Get out of my comfort zone - practice public audience/speaking
Self-improvement - personally and professionally
The last one is important, because it also applies to running.
As a masters athlete, (and as humans) we should constantly be asking "what can I do to get better?"
Whether that means hiring a coach, adding a strength/mobility routine, examining your nutrition, or setting a goal for an upcoming race, adopting a growth mindset is key as we get older.
Three days after I moved here, it was time for my first class. I was nervous, and a little excited combined with a side of anxiety from the move.
Can you relate to those feelings? Perhaps in the starting corrals at a race?
If you put the time and effort into making changes and improvements, you will see results. Whether you get stronger, run faster, or feel better in general, the key is GETTING BETTER.
For me, I gained confidence, friendships, and a willingness to go another round of class in October. I'm be a better coach, human, and my brain got a great workout too!
In conclusion, the answer to the subject line "Can Improv Class Improve Your Running/Life?" is a resounding YES.
DECIDE for yourself what it is that you want to do to help your growth/running and GET BETTER.
Many thanks to "The Juicy Grapes" summer class of 2024 for a life changing experience!
Our wonderful "coach" Rebecca in the middle!
Keep moving forward my friends, one step at a time.
Coach Nicole

What "walls" do you have around you?
Mine will be coming down (and coming out) this Thursday with a special update with regard to JumpStartRunning. Nervous and excited all at the same time...
WHAT THE HECK DOES MOBILITY MEAN AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
TIME FOR A WORKSHOP!
COULD YOUR FASCIAL SYSTEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BACK/HIP/SHOULDER/FOOT PAIN? (yes)
When clients hear the word "fascia" some of them scrunch up their nose and say "what?"
The fascia is essentially a sheath of connective tissues that surrounds EVERYTHING in your body.
Fascia has been around (we all have it!) but it has not been STUDIED as long as other areas of the human body. It's not detected through x-ray/MRI, yet quite often it is a massive culprit for musculoskeletal injuries.
It's also a huge advantage to incorporate training of the fascial system for running/performance because it is responsible for storing, releasing, and transferring elastic energy through the body (think kangaroos and gazelles!) for speed, power, and injury resilience.
I referenced mobility and "getting better" above. One way that I love to help my clients (and myself) to get better is to help them train their fascial systems.
As we get older, it's even MORE important to train this system, as it's like putting WD-40 in your body (don't try that at home).
I feel so strongly about this, that I will be hosting a workshop for this on Saturday, September 14th. (you don't have to be live, but it definitely makes it better!) I will be posting a link in the next email this week with more details.

TREADMILL TUESDAY
Stick around for this story about my friend & her smoothie - it's SO funny!!! (And yes, she told me I could tell the tale!)
Fifty years ago, Kathrine Switzer (women's running pioneer and co-founder of 261 Fearless) WON the NYC marathon.
I've never run NYC and it's been on my bucket list. Since I turned 50 this past June, it seemed fitting to not only run the NYC marathon this fall, but to join the amazing women/261 Fearless charity team!

In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, For years, International Women’s Day (IWD) would have meant one thing for me: a long run on a spring afternoon while training for Boston. This year, I went for a long walk instead. Many of you know I won't be running the marathon this year, and I didn't want to admit the reason was my body. I have come to accept the reason as a gift, which I get to share with you. Menopause moved the...
In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, I had written this week’s newsletter about the Olympics. But two other stories bumped it to another time. Since it's the weekend, I'm asking you to set aside 24 minutes and watch this video. You might need some Kleenex, but it's well worth it. It’s about running, but it’s not about running. It’s about love, resilience, and perspective. It made me forget the noise — and remember what truly...
In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, “Can I call you sometime… I need a good heart to ❤️”That was the text I got from one of my college roommates from PT school. Five days earlier, she’d had her hip replaced. That part surprised me—she’s always been incredibly active. She’s 66 now, and her hip pain had been brewing for months. What didn’t surprise me was what “the system” told her she couldn’t do—instead of telling her what...
