A Snake, A Horse, And What About Testosterone Now?

Jumpstartrunning Presents:

In The Long Run

IMPACTful THOUGHTS:

(IMPACT was my chosen word for 2025 - what was yours?)

Hello Reader,

A few months ago, I attended a women’s gathering in Boulder where someone casually mentioned the Chinese zodiac.

Apparently, 2025 is the Year of the Snake, and 2026 is the Year of the Horse.

Many of the women nodded knowingly — I was waiting for further context, but no one elaborated. After the event, I went home and looked it up.

Here’s what I found:

🐍 The Snake represents transformation — shedding what no longer serves you.
🐎 The Horse represents optimism — forward movement, expansion, and something new.

And honestly? That falls in line with how my year has gone, along with visions for the future.

Here are a few examples of each:

My Snake Year (2025): What I’m Shedding

• Stepping away from in-person physical therapy and moving fully virtual
• Leaving Boulder and relocating to Louisville, CO next June
• Letting go of a long streak of consecutive Boston Marathons
• Releasing "I only work with runners" vs. "active midlife women" in ADDITION to runners
• Stop fighting my physiology while running. Change is coming

My Horse Year (2026): What I’m Becoming

  • Launching a podcast - "Tread Talks"
  • Certified life-coach
  • WISDOM vs. INFORMATION for runners
  • Creating a new membership and building true community (both in-person and virtual)
  • Rebranding, a new website, and… the return of “Nikki”
  • Leading with more kindness, courage, and love

And Now, You.

As you look back on 2025…

What are you shedding/leaving behind?
And what are you quietly preparing to step into in 2026?

Hit REPLY and tell me — what is your Snake… and what is your Horse?

May you have a safe and healthy New Year's Eve. Looking forward to ringing in 2026 with you!

Keep moving forward my friends, one step at a time.

WHAT'S YOUR 2026 WORD?

My word for 2025 was IMPACT.

A year ago, I had barely been in Boulder for six months. I had been to several "Meetup" groups in addition to attending "Run Club" each week.

Conversations were superficial, and I noticed most people didn't ask questions/listen well.

Therefore, my intention for "IMPACT" was to really pay attention and lead with curiosity.

By the end of this year, the intention for "IMPACT" transformed to "How can I be of service and help more people feel better?"

I found the answer (along with my 2026 word), which you will see in the next few weeks.

Did you have any "A-HA" moments with your word, or do you know your 2026 word? Hit REPLY and tell me!!

Why I'm Not Running Boston This Year

In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, For years, International Women’s Day (IWD) would have meant one thing for me: a long run on a spring afternoon while training for Boston. This year, I went for a long walk instead. Many of you know I won't be running the marathon this year, and I didn't want to admit the reason was my body. I have come to accept the reason as a gift, which I get to share with you. Menopause moved the...

This Was Supposed to Be About the Olympics

In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, I had written this week’s newsletter about the Olympics. But two other stories bumped it to another time. Since it's the weekend, I'm asking you to set aside 24 minutes and watch this video. You might need some Kleenex, but it's well worth it. It’s about running, but it’s not about running. It’s about love, resilience, and perspective. It made me forget the noise — and remember what truly...

Who's the Boss of Your Recovery?

In The Long Run Thoughts and BELIEFS: (BELIEF is my chosen word for 2026 - what is yours?) Hello Reader, “Can I call you sometime… I need a good heart to ❤️”That was the text I got from one of my college roommates from PT school. Five days earlier, she’d had her hip replaced. That part surprised me—she’s always been incredibly active. She’s 66 now, and her hip pain had been brewing for months. What didn’t surprise me was what “the system” told her she couldn’t do—instead of telling her what...
